Juan Harnie (b. 1993) is a jewellery designer, maker, and collector based in Hasselt, Belgium. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Jewellery Design from the MAD-faculty in Hasselt. His work is driven by the belief that jewellery can function as a carrier of emotion, memory and narrative rather than as a purely decorative object.
Harnie’s current practice is rooted in his own personal memories, which he translates into intimate, wearable pieces. Through these objects, he explores themes such as vulnerability and emotional attachment. Material choice plays a central role in his work; he is particularly drawn to materials that are not traditionally associated with jewellery, using them to create tension and add conceptual depth. Alongside his personal practice, Harnie is the founder of J is for jewellery, an online platform dedicated to contemporary jewellery. Through this initiative, he participates in both national and international exhibitions. J is for jewellery focuses on making contemporary jewellery more accessible and on presenting a broad spectrum of works, ranging from affordable pieces to larger designs. |
